Spain Road Trip- 12 days Itinerary

Planning for a vacation be like, a lot of research about the place, hotel bookings, flight bookings, point of interests, keeping family comfort in mind, etc. Our family is an ardent fan of road trips like most of the Canadians and summer vacations are best to use the opportunity to drive miles in a place not visited before. This summer, we planned a road trip to the beautiful country of Spain. The road trip was inspired by the famous Bollywood Blockbuster, “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”, which means you’ve only got one life, live it to the fullest. It’s a tale of 3 friends joining on a road trip in Spain, exploring different places and adventures.

Spain is a mountainous country, dominated by high plateaus and mountain chains. Some of them were lush green, some of them barren but majestic as they looked. On our 12 days in Spain on road, we made millions of memories with the family, we drove 3,500 km in Spain and visited 12 cities, we almost covered entire Spain.

Medieval Times, Andalusia, Gothics, beautiful architecture, rich history, beaches, and culture make Spain a unique place to live and visit. Spain was once the strongest country in the world hence Spanish is the 2nd highest language spoken worldwide. Many catchy pop-songs that came out recently are in Spanish too.

Booking a flight: – Our flights are always booked through Expedia; it gives us the best rates for the preferred routes. We have been using this service for almost more than 10 years and are very happy with the services. They also give us an option of canceling a flight within 24 hours of booking and without paying an extra dime for cancellation, if we ever changed our mind by just calling their customer care centers. We have done that a few times, quite satisfied. We also have installed their apps on our mobile phones to check special offers etc. This time, we found a special deal for our tickets to Canada via Spain from Dubai with a stopover at no extra charge.

Booking a hotel: – There are many booking engines that provide the best rates, but we have been hooked on to Booking.com for a while, they have special rates and various options to choose from. The reviews and rating come very handy before booking a hotel. They have recently started an Air BnB kind of additions as well where you can rent one-bedroom, 2 bedroom apartments as well. These apartments are not cheap but spacious and you can choose the location of your choice by reading the reviews and ratings.

On this trip, we skipped booking a regular hotel and went for an apartment kind of vacation in Spain. We booked one-bedroom apartments in the center of the down which was easily accessible on feet. Since it was an apartment, we were able to cook a few meals at home and eat out whenever needed. All the apartment we booked came with an equipped kitchen, a microwave, and the dishwasher, some even had the washing machine. It’s spacious and perfect for the family.

Choosing the Transport: – Since we wanted to do a road trip, we booked a car online through AVIS Rent-a-Car, you can pick up a car from the airport and drop it back at the airport. We picked up Audi-A8 from Madrid Airport and dropped it back at the same place after finishing the trip. Renting a Car is really convenient, as you can make stops according to your plans and drive wherever and whenever you want to go. The best part about driving in Europe is to drive the best European cars.

Alternatively, you can also choose the option of taking a bus or train in Spain, public transport in Spain is excellent and very well maintained.

Drawback and Tips: – We had a few problems with getting a bigger car, most of the cars there were small luxury cars. The parking spaces in Spain is really small, I had to literally stand outside to help in parking everywhere we parked.

Luggage: – We had taken a stopover, so we had a lot of luggage but it’s best to pack as minimal as you can go, more luggage meant a bigger car and more hassle. My husband wanted to do 4 T-shirts, 2 shorts kind of vacation which wasn’t possible this time. Summer clothes are anyways light, if you are traveling in summer, pack as light as you can.

Choosing places to Visit, 12 days Itinerary: –

  1. Madrid
  2. Bilbao
  3. San Sebastien
  4. Pamplona
  5. Barcelona
  6. Valencia
  7. Alicante
  8. Malaga
  9. Almunecar
  10. Seville
  11. Cordoba
  12. Toledo

Some of them were stop overs and some were 1 night and 2-night stays, we drove during the day as it was really hot to roam outside and walked during the evening hours. Next day, woke up with our own space, packed up and left for another destination. It was so much fun to look forward to an adventure in another city as we slept for the night and to cherish the moments we had during the day. We made a few mistakes in choosing some destinations, I would be writing more details in the next blog. Till then, peace out!
