Parents are often scared to take a long journey with small kids since they are moving a lot, can’t speak much and anything can push their cry button. You need to make sure if the flight is perfect for them and the list goes on. I have explored 15-hour straight flight alone with kids, as well as the journey of more than 36 hrs that included, a train, taxi, and air, my little one was 9 moths old then. I have realized that night flights are much better with the little ones.
This winter, I took my boys to Dubai with Air Canada which started from here around 10 pm and believe me I was still scared though I have traveled with them alone before. The older one isn’t a problem but the little one who has just turned 4. It can be terrible as they can pick at any time but since it was a night flight, things were pretty good. My suggestions for you all here would be:
- Always give something to suck or drink to children below 2 years. Take off and landing causes ear pains to the little one while sucking on something or taking a sip of water can keep it away.
- Pack your bags wisely. While traveling with kids, you have to make sure you carry almost everything that is required.
- An extra pair of clothes for each one in the family( Even the older children can puke during the journey, just in case). We have had a situation before with the older one but luckily we had an extra pair.
- For longer flights keep small toys, stickers and their favorite books in the handbag and give them a new stuff every time they are bored.(Don’t go for the expensive stuff, even cheaper stuff from the Dollar store could be fascinating for ur little ones)
- Pre-record their favorite movies/ songs to entertain them in longer flights. Now since these gadgets are banned in some countries, you can carry their favorite books.
- Buy some of their favorite food inside the airport. Snacks n milk bought after the security check is allowed to carry in the plane.
- Most important thing, don’t let them sleep too much during the day and definitely avoid in the car to the airport so that they get tired and sleep longer hours in the flight.
- Make sure to give them food and drink after they are awake as a hungry child could be grumpy.
- Avoid giving them a lot of fluid at once as it could definitely lead to vomit, just a few sips at a time.
- Always keep Tylenol and Gravol with u in the handbag, just in case.
We found night flights were blessings with small children, they normally get excited to see the plane, the TV, and the new surroundings, it takes a while for them to settle down but once they sleep, most likely it’s for the longer duration.
You may spend at least 2 hours, playing and showing them the TV and the toys you got ,feed them first and then put them to sleep. They would eventually sleep, due to their body clock telling them to shut down the battery and they will wake up recharged in the morning. By the time they wake up, it’s hardly 2-3 hrs remaining to land, we sailed a 15 hours flight with the same trick. Remember, don’t let them sleep so much during the day, let them get tired so that they just fall asleep.
I normally send my kids to school whenever we take a night flight and make sure they don’t nap in the car, might feel rude to some but they will actually be happy by getting proper sleep at night, 😀and you will also be at peace, 😀
