On December 22,2013 just 2 days after my little one’s 1st B’day, there was a major Ice Storm that hit Toronto. The storm started building up from the evening of December, 20 itself for 3 days n on December 22. For the first time in Canada, I’d seen power outage for more than 10 hours. We’re all in the bed at around 2am when the heater suddenly went off, with minus temperatures, it took just an hour or two to cool down the entire house. Luckily, we’re in the bed till the morning, we brought our puppy up with us upstairs and put him in his sweaters n blanket as well, it was freezing even inside.
We crave for coffee/ tea every morning and that morning, when the roads were all icy and too dangerous to drive, we couldn’t dare to even step outside to get into the car.
Since everything is electronics, we’re thinking how would we cook today, if not for us for kids??The backyard barbecue came to the rescue where we made our tea and warmed milk for kids. It was taking so long to even start warming up due to blowing wind. Luckily, barbecue was operated by propane and flame worked well to deliver us hot cup of tea in the frigid cold. Since it was already more than 10 hours, we decided to get in the car and drive in the mall to warm up but thank God the power came back. We’re fortunate enough that it was back.
There were hundreds of houses in Toronto that didn’t have power for a week and those people had to use community centers to warm them up and for other things. Forget power, there was not even water available. How could one use their washrooms??Those people even spent their Christmas in the dark for the year 2013!!! The electric wires and poles were badly affected by the storm. Maintenance worked day and night to repair but it took so long because of the cold and windchill.
It was a Christmas, which was never dreamed or desired by anybody!!! Sharing some pictures after the Ice-Storm was over. It looked so beautiful,:) It was like, God was playing with His brush and colors and with some ice to draw such marvelous Iced carved leaves and branches to decorate those dry n dead trees, 🙂
